Rock Climbing

Is where participants climb up either real rock faces, or man made rock surfaces, they are aiming to reach the top of the surface, or the summit. In rock climbing the participant has to use their own hands and feet to not just make there way up the rock but also to hold and balance their weight.

Rock climbing is none to both be a physical and mental sport with the climber not only having to be physically fit to stand the test but they also need to be mentally able to take on the challenge in order to make it through.

Climbers are usually paired up in order to help on another to control the ropes used, and the anchors' which catch the falls. In basic rock climbing a rope with have been attached to the top the surface before hand with the rope running through the anchor, being attached to the both the climber and also to the belayer' a person who makes sure the rope is taut through out the climb, this stopping any long falls. Another form of climbing is called lead climbing' this is were one half of the pair is the leader' who climbs up the surface with the rope, which in this case isn't attached through an anchor whilst the other one stays behind. Due to the rope being of a certain length the leader is only able to climb a certain distance, therefore the climb is broke down into several pitches, where the leader sets up the anchor allowing the other people to climb up to them. This continues until both climbers reach the top.
